Ragnar 2012

Needless to say we had a blast.  We were lucky and were in a super fun car, plus Evan was driving the truck (thank you Dave!) me in the middle, and then my wonderful, love her to pieces sister in law on the other side of me.  We had three other people in the backseat who we didn't know going into it, but we ended up having so much fun with them.  Ragnar started out perfectly, everyone was rocking their legs and getting great times.  We started half an hour late because we were running a bit late leaving Salt Lake, so we started at 10am.  I had a 6.8 flat leg, then Kerry had her monster hill.  She completely rocked it, never walked and kept an amazing pace.  Everyone by us had nicknamed her the cute skirt girl.  Because let's be honest, she looked sassy and adorable for every leg she had.  Evan followed Kerry's leg down the backside of Avon to hand off to our second van.  Like I said, all of us were feeling awesome and rocking every leg.

After the second van finished, we were on to the night legs.  Evan and I love these because it's dark and not as hot and you can literally zone out and just rock it.  We were a bit late getting in for the exchange for my leg so our car had no clue I had even left.  I was feeling great on my leg, and getting some of the best mile times I had gotten in a long time.  As I was coming into the finish, I was trying to avoid running in the gravel so I thought further down by the exchange it looked all asphalt so I headed that way.  As I went to turn down into the exchange, I realized there was a bit of a drop off.  A little too late though, I rolled my foot on top of itself right as I was finishing.  At first I thought I had just sprained my ankle and just went back to the car.  Over the next 3 hours while the rest of the runners were going, it sucked.  I have never sprained an ankle or anything, so I had no clue how it was or wasn't supposed to hurt.  Kerry rocked her night leg too, and then Evan had his death leg which was 8.8 miles up hill.  He was feeling great and finished it, and then we were off to sleep.

It took us an hour and a half to battle all the traffic to get to the sleep point, then all of us crashed.  When we got up I expected my foot to be completely better, because I assumed it was a sprain and I would be good to go for the day.  Needless to say that wasn't the case.  It was way worse, so Evan had me go to the First Aid tent to get it wrapped and see how it felt.  At this point, I think Evan was prepping himself to take over my leg because he knew it wasn't going to happen for me.  The whole situation was extremely frustrating because I had trained and my whole body was fine besides my foot.  I wasn't sore, I was feeling great for my last leg. After a mini breakdown Evan convinced me I wasn't going to be running my hard leg, and he was going to take it over.  Keep in mind, Evan's last leg was only 2.5 miles and instead now it was going to be 7.7 up a huge hill.  All together Evan ran 23.3 miles during Ragnar.  And he ran all extremely difficult legs.  He never complained or got mad at me, he just did it.  He is the most amazing person, still now I can't believe he ran that much.  I could never do what he did.  When he finished everyone went through their legs, Kerry was doing 8 minute miles on her last leg because she was feeling awesome.  And looked cute on top of it.  She seriously did so awesome on her last leg.
This is her coming into the exchange

This was right before my last leg
After Kerry's leg, I had decided regardless I was going to run Evan's leg for him.  It was the least I could do after he ran my 7.7 leg.  And yes my foot was throbbing and I could barely tie the laces since it was so swollen but I wanted to feel like I was contributing to the team.  So off I went!  As soon as I made it through mile 1 it started going numb and didn't hurt as bad.  I did pass someone with my limp, hobble jog I was doing (I would like to note, I didn't walk through the leg I did run the whole time).  We finished, and my parents were there with a margarita.  Hands down best ever.

We went back to the high school to wait for the rest of our team to finish.  Our last runner did get a bit lost and ran 3 miles in the wrong direction.  So his 7 mile leg turned into 13.  Oh well, that's the fun of Ragnar!  We did make it home and had a nice Father's Day until my Dad forced me to go the doctor.  My foot was a tad swollen needless to say.  And yes, after the x-ray the doctor came back with the great info that my left side of my foot was cracked and was broken and now I get to wear an awesome boot.

So thank you Ragnar, we will be back next year and I won't be breaking anything for that one.  We had so much fun for this Ragnar and I definitely want to do it next year with Kerry and Evan.

Favorite people!!

My abs were literally sore from so much laughing with you guys. We had such a blast. I'm bummed for you that you broke your foot, I know how much you wanted to run your last leg. And you would have killed it.

Seriously can't wait for next year .. oh wait and then we're going shopping to buy you a Lulu skirt .. and then we're running a FULL marathon together next year too!! I won't even know what to do with myself .. all these exciting things happening!

P.S. You're a badass family. Badass Rachel for running on a broken foot. Badass Evan for running all those hard legs without complaining!
